Here’s a buddy movie that doesn’t take itself seriously.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard… What a funny idea, you could think. Funny is the right word. I didn’t expect that the film wouldn’t take itself  seriously. I didn’t expect to laugh, but to see an action movie with action only, without any real storytelling. Well, the screenplay isn’t very complex  but it is enjoyable to follow it.

The pitch: Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) is to be escorted by Interpol from Manchester to the International Court of Justice at The Hague to testify against Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman) who is  Belarus’ dictator. This escort will, of course, be compromised despite the protection of Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds)  the best bodyguard ever.

I would never have thought of this duo for a buddy movie, but it works. They are both just as funny, though Ryan Reynolds character is so absurdly funny, it gives us a bit of empathy for him. The Samuel L. Jackson’s laughter is communicative and the comedy of situation which is predictable sometimes works in some scenes. Salma Hayek, who plays Darius Kincaid’s wife, doesn’t appear a lot but is still funny when she does. As for Gary Oldman, I’ve seen him deliver better performances.

One of the strengths of this film is its original soundtrack setting romantic songs like Hello by Lionel Ritchie or I Want to Know What Love Is by Foreigner in crazy fight scenes or some other songs such as Dancing In The Moonlight of King Harvest and even little Queenie by Chuck Berry. Those choices prove that the filmmaker didn’t want his film to be taken too seriously but rather on a humoristic side.

Some fighting scenes remind me of Kingsman: Secret Services in their choregraphy, and I enjoyed that. However, I had some  problems with some really bad visual effects  (green screen problems) that one could wonder if it was done on purpose. I think so but it was still odd to me

Anyway, The Hitman’s Bodyguard doesn’t disappoint. I even can say that it amazingly surprised me.
