Tim Burton is not at the top of his art in this film that unfolds too quickly. Christoph Waltz is good as usual but Amy Adams is a bland compared to him, just like the weird paintings from her character. There also are many ellipses, frustrations and boredom… An ordinary film.
“Big Eyes”, the latest Tim Burton’s movie adapted from a 60’s headline news that happened in the United States. This flashy colored universe under a California sunshine, makes you believe that the gates of heaven are not too far from hell – which is probably true. It also makes me feel like this film wasn’t really directing by Tim Burton . No passion, anything that makes me shudder or amaze me at the same time. It can leave you dissatisfied; it is not as good as Tim Burton’s previous movies. Even the score composed by Danny Elfman did not strike me.
The thing is, you know from the beginning what is going to happen. So you just wish for one thing to happen: something unexpected… which never happens.
On the positive side, only Christoph Waltz’s performance as a failed artist converted into a forger who appropriates his wife big eyed character pantings. He is self-confident and charismatic whereas Amy Adams character looked slightly tasteless which is too bad (her performance in “American Hustle” was definitely one of her best).
I don’t forget the female character evolution; a divorced mother who misses her first emancipation and starts by being a woman who needs to be married to be accepted by the society. She finally becomes an independent woman who decides to handle things later on. It seemed to be a subliminal feminist message that I missed or that is not exploited enough.
