The Railway Man from Jonathan Teplitzky

Based on Eric Lormax true story, The Railway Man is about a former British soldier who was a prisoner of war, haunted by a Japanese officer who tortured him during World War II.

The Railway Man is not a story about another war episode (in this case we might think that this is related to the River Kwai Bridge construction), but it is rather about the devastation that war entails even many years later. The film switches from a time to another between the 80s and the flashbacks occurring in the 40s. Transitions are rather well done, so that we would forget there are 40 years between those two times. The film shows a perfect photography with a classic directing.

Colin Firth (Eric) is good. He manages to interpret a traumatized and frightened soldier by his past. And he has a real desire for revenge. Nicole Kidman (Patti) is the only feminine touch of this film and she is the thread of this story because we discover Eric’s unease through it.

This film is divided into three parts. The film starts with Eric and Patti’s meeting and wedding. It is followed by Patti’s discovery of her husband’s past. This part lasts more than half an hour and highlights the actor Jeremy Irvine, who brilliantly plays his part as young Eric Lormax. In the third part, Eric deals with his past.

The rhythm of the film is slow throughout the movie but the actors’ performance counterbalances this time stopping sensation. Beyond war and conflict, the director Jonathan Teplitzy wanted to tell a story about human relationships and forgiveness.
