Maps to the Stars from David Cronenberg

What can I say about Maps to the Stars… First, I am pretty reserved by this film. I wondered what was its target when I left the theatre. Here is why…

Maps to the Stars… It seems that the story satirically told Hollywood’s behind the scenes world through crazy characters who are really annoying and embarrassing.

You do not immediately see the link between the characters but they all have one thing in common: they are psychologically disturbed. There is an awkwardness between the pyromaniac who is accused of fratricide attempt on her young brother, who sees dead children & the has-been actress who sees her young dead mother’s ghost who was an actress that she hated but dreams to play on screen.

Julianne Moore’s performance is excellent and manages to make her character (the has-been actress) annoying and odious. She actually won the Best Actor Award at the last Cannes Festival. I think Mia Wasikowska was made for playing a psychotic sister. The driver’s part was surely useful to embody the difficulty of being an actor in the merciless world of Hollywood, but Robert Pattinson turns out not to be good enough. Moreover, the characters have a superficial behaviour which is a contrast with their psychology.

Without any spoilers, some scenes suddenly appear and disrupt the continuity of the film. You simply wonder what they bring to the story like a weird Immolation made with bad visual effects at some point in the movie. The poem Liberty written by Paul Eluard is omnipresent. It may try to convey psychological distress & thanks to it some characters, through this poem, try to get some “freedom”, a desire to escape their toxic lives they live every day.

I’d wish there were a moral to the story, but if there is, I’m afraid I’m missed it.
