The Tale of Princess Kaguya directed by Isao Takahata

After The Wind Rises by Miyazaki, this week, Takahata, another master of animated movie,  offers us a work in the tradition of his other films, including one that we all cry watching “Grave of the Fireflies”.

With a “sketched” 2D animation, the director tells us by the photography and the soundtrack, the legendary tale of Princess Kaguya. A film that could be the latest by this Japanese master and end his career under the sign of “maturity”.

In fact, like most of the stories and legends of the country of the rising sun, the story targets children but even more adults. With issues of freedom, parenting and spirituality, you are embarked in a very symbolic and graceful magical world.

Far from the confrontation between good vs evil as usually seen in Disney movies, this film is rich and showcases the Japanese culture’s traditions. Warning, this is not a simple princess movie!

If you are still hesitating (if you are still undecided?) and you like animated movies, you should go and see it in theater, for at least one scene… The brilliant kimonos scene proves the maestro of Japanese animated movies can still surprise you!
