A feel-good movie combining British phlegm and Bollywood secenery with good actors who deal with the end of life without drama.
This is the sequel of the first film by the same title (or nearly) “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” sets the plot mixing of Indian touristic landscapes and the countryside with a friendly Bollywood atmosphere. Who would have ever imagined that considering the context: a hotel where its resident are seniors that you hoped haven’t passed away during the night?
This is how life is in this palace, with Sonny Kapoor’s wedding preparations (Dev Patel), the residents’ health, implicit love stories and the sudden appearance of Richard Gere (although you can’t say that is part is amazing) who messes things up in the hotel. There is also the desire to expand it and its concept by launching a branch.
As for the previous film, the cast is really good. Between Judi Dench, Bill Nighy or Celia Imrie, you feel lucky to watch them. But the best one was Dame Maggie Smith who can’t be overlooked since her part as Lady Grantham in ” Downton Abbey.” She brings this little deadpan sense of humour that makes you smile to every line she says. These actors bring the British phlegm that the film needed.
Unlike the previous film, this sequel is a simple story without any new elements in the character’s life. It remains a sequel without a plot concerning them. There is no real action. It’s the risk when you try to make a sequel to a film that is adapted from a book which doesn’t have its own sequel (the first film was adapted from ” These Foolish Things ” by Deborah Moggach).
This film will leave you in a good mood.
