This is the moving story of Einar Wegener Danes, the Danish painter who became Lily Elbe, the first transgender woman with the support of his wife, Greda. They are both wonderfully performed by Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander.
We have heard about this new film directed by Tom Hooper in which Eddie Redmayne has undergone a physical transformation on screen once again (after being Stephen Hawkins in The Theory of Everything). Therefore, I couldn’t miss it.
I think I am about to have a crush on another British actor: Eddie Redmayne. After his interpretation as Stephen Hawkins for which he won the Oscar for best actor in 2015 (also nominated in the same category this year), he is stunning again as Einar Wegener/Lily Elbe. He plays without exaggeration and with a real credibility. Tom Hooper managed to show the change that progressively occurred in the character gradually as the film unfold.
Our empathy is huge for the painter and his wife Greda, that Alicia Vikander played very well (she is also nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role). Greda was a real support to Einar. They were a fusional couple: the husband was more introverted than his wife, and she was decision-maker. Marital aspects seemed somewhat reversed since Einar started to wear women’s clothes and Greda taught him women gestures so as to “play a game”.
I immediately recognized Alexandre Desplat’s soundtrack from the first musical notes of the film. He perfectly managed to illustrate scenes once more. However, his soundtrack had some little similarities to The Imitation Game one. But the music was very pleasant to listen to.
Adapted from the novel of the same title by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is a gem full of emotions.
